How the total bag cost is worked out

This calculator adds every bag charge that applies to your trip: the checked bag price, any overweight fee, any oversize fee and, on a basic fare, the carry-on fee. It works per bag and per flight, so a round trip counts each charge twice. The prices come from the airline hub pages on this site, which record the online or prepaid price and the day it was checked. Fee data is as of 2026-09-30. Spirit Airlines ceased operations on 2026-05-02 and is not listed.

Here is the full table the tool reads, with a link to each airline page for the fine print. A value marked not published means the airline does not list a fixed figure we could verify. The tools skip that airline for that check instead of guessing.

The math is simple. Take American Airlines. The first bag is $45 and the second is $55 each way. Two bags on a round trip cost ($45 + $55) x 2 = $200. Now make one bag weigh 55 lb. That crosses the 50 lb limit, so the $100 overweight fee is added each way. One bag on a round trip becomes $45 x 2 + $100 x 2 = $290. The tool does this for you, and it adds an oversize fee when length plus width plus height goes over the airline limit.

Fare type matters mostly for the carry-on. On a basic fare some airlines still include a full-size carry-on, and some charge for it. Checked bag prices in our data do not change with the fare, so check your own fare rules. If you only need a rough comparison, try the cheapest airline for my bags tool, or see how the two surcharges work in the overweight and oversize bag fee calculator. Measure first with the linear inches calculator.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • American Airlines checked bag fees and policies
  • Delta baggage policy and fees
  • JetBlue optional services and fees
  • Southwest optional travel charges
  • Frontier bag options
  • Adventure Calcs airline hub pages (as of 2026-09-30). Note: airlines change bag fees often and some publish ranges
  • confirm the price at checkout before you pay

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the first checked bag cost money on every airline?

No. Most big US airlines charge for the first checked bag on domestic trips, while several international carriers in our table list it as $0. Open the American Airlines page or another airline page to see the exact price.

What does not published mean in the result?

It means the airline does not list a fixed price we could verify, for example Frontier bag prices that change by date. The tool leaves that fee out of the total and tells you which one is missing.

Are the prices online or at the airport?

Online or prepaid, which is usually the lowest price. Airport prices are often a few dollars higher. Fees change often, so treat the result as an estimate and confirm at checkout.
