The exact miles to kilometers factor

One international mile is defined as exactly 1.609344 kilometers. The figure is exact because the mile is now defined from the meter: 5,280 feet, with each foot exactly 0.3048 meter. To convert miles to kilometers, multiply by 1.609344. To go from kilometers to miles, divide by 1.609344, or multiply by about 0.621371. No rounding appears in the factor itself, only in the answer you read off the screen. Short distances such as a 5K race or a 10 mile commute convert in the same way as long road trips, so you can use one method for running, driving and hiking maps.

Worked example: a marathon is 26.2 miles. Multiply 26.2 by 1.609344 and you get 42.165 kilometers, which matches the official 42.195 km course length once the exact 26 miles 385 yards is used. The tool shows the answer to two decimals at the top and three decimals in the detail rows, plus meters and feet so you can move between road signs and trail maps.

For quick mental math, add half and then a tenth: 10 miles is 10 + 5 + 1, or about 16 km, against the exact 16.09. Going from kilometers to miles, multiply by 0.6. Speed limits work the same way, since 60 mph is about 97 km/h. Driving abroad? The flight time calculator covers the air leg, and the inches to cm converter handles small lengths.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • NIST SP 811 Appendix B8, conversion factors (nist.gov/pml/special-publication-811/nist-guide-si-appendix-b-conversion-factors/nist-guide-si-appendix-b8)
  • NIST unit conversion guidance (nist.gov/pml/owm/metric-si/unit-conversion). Note: race distances in the table are rounded to three decimals

Frequently asked questions

Is the mile the same in every country?

The international mile used here is exact at 1.609344 km. The older US survey mile differs by about two parts per million and only matters for land surveys.

How many kilometers are in a 10 mile run?

Ten miles is 16.09 km. A 10K race is shorter, at 6.21 miles.

How do I convert km/h to mph?

Divide km/h by 1.609344. A 100 km/h limit is 62.1 mph. The same factor applies, since both speeds use one hour.
