Where these numbers come from

Virgin Atlantic has a simple split. All three economy fares, Light, Classic and Delight, include one piece of hand luggage weighing up to 10 kg. The difference is the hold. Economy Light includes no checked bag. Classic and Delight each include one 23 kg bag. So a Light ticket is priced like a carry-on-only fare, and the airline expects you to buy a bag if you need one.

The figures here come from two places. Virgin Atlantic's own economy page states the fare rules: hand luggage only on Light, one 23 kg bag on Classic and Delight. The sizes and the US-origin fee schedule come from a Cabin Zero guide that quotes them. Virgin's own help pages did not return readable text in this check, so treat the dollar prices as a guide and confirm them at booking or in Manage Booking.

Hand luggage is 56 x 36 x 23 cm, close to the 22 x 14 x 9 inch size most US airlines use. That means a standard roller carry-on usually fits. Handbags, small backpacks, coats and similar items are listed as extras that do not count against the bag. Test your own bag with the bag fit checker before you rely on it.

Worked example, leaving the US on Light with one checked bag each way. The first extra bag costs $75 per direction, so a round trip is $150 if the US-origin price applies on both legs. Two bags each way cost $75 plus $100, or $175 per direction and $350 round trip. Classic usually costs more than Light, so compare the fare gap with the bag fees. If the gap is under $150 for one bag, Classic wins. A bag over 23 kg adds $100 on top, and a bag over the size limit adds $300.

Compare neighbors before booking. British Airways and Aer Lingus also fly the North Atlantic with different hold rules. The cheapest airline for my bags calculator shows which fare comes out lowest once every bag is counted. Fees on flights that start in the UK are quoted in pounds and are not the same as the US-origin dollar figures above.
