How the true cruise cost is built

The fare on a cruise ad is the smallest piece of the bill. Taxes and port fees, daily gratuities, drinks, shore excursions, getting to the port, parking and insurance all sit on top. This calculator lists each one so the total matches what leaves your account, not the headline rate. Use it before you book to compare two sailings fairly, and again after booking to set a realistic budget. A cheap fare on a long flight and a pricey port can cost more than a higher fare that leaves from a nearby city.

The method is simple addition. Per-person items are multiplied by the number of guests. Gratuities use a per-person daily rate times guests times nights. Hotel and parking are entered as one total for the group. The sum is divided by guests and then by nights, which gives a cost per person per day you can compare with a resort week or a road trip.

Here is the default example. Two guests sail 7 nights at $900 each, plus $150 each in taxes and fees. Gratuities at $18 per person per day add $252. Drinks, excursions, flights, a hotel night, parking, insurance and onboard spending bring the group total to $4,822. That is $2,411 per person, about $344 per person per day, and the fare is only 37 percent of it. Every number is an editable example. Replace each with the price on your booking page. Leave a box at zero if a cost does not apply to you, such as parking when you fly in or insurance when you already have coverage. The per-day figure then stays honest.

Line-specific figures change, so check the current rate before you book. Gratuity rules differ a lot: use the cruise gratuity calculator, then test drinks with the drink package calculator and size shore costs with the excursion budget calculator. Compare the final number with a resort stay in the cruise vs all-inclusive calculator.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • Cruise line gratuity, beverage and port pages recorded in the Adventure Calcs entity data files, checked 2026-09-30. Note: fare, taxes, drinks, excursions, flights, hotel, parking, insurance and onboard spending are editable examples, not quotes

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

Are taxes and port fees included in the fare?

Usually not in the advertised price. Lines show them as a separate line at checkout, so enter that figure in the taxes box.

What should I use for gratuities?

Use your line's current daily rate per guest. The cruise gratuity calculator lists the rates on file and lets you type your own.

Does this include cabin upgrades or specialty dining?

Not as separate lines. Add them to the other onboard spending box so they land in the total and the per-day figure.
