Where these numbers come from

American changed its domestic bag prices twice in 2026. Tickets issued on or after April 9 pay $50 for the first bag and $60 for the second in Main Cabin. Since May 18, Basic Economy tickets pay $5 more per bag: $55 and $65. Paying online saves $5 on each of those, and a third bag is $200 on both fares.

The online discount is easy to miss. A Main Cabin traveler who adds the bag in the app pays $45 and $55, so two bags each way cost $100 rather than $110. On a round trip that is $200 versus $220, and for a family of four it adds up to $80 saved. The fee is also non-refundable when paid at the airport.

American has small first steps for overweight and oversize bags. A bag of 52 lb adds only $30, and a bag measuring 64 inches adds $30. Above 53 lb the add-on jumps to $100, and above 65 inches it is $200. The top limits are 100 lb and 115 inches. Airline staff will not accept anything larger.

Worked example: a Basic Economy traveler checks one 55 lb bag, paid online, on a round trip. The bag fee is $50 each way. The 53 to 70 lb band adds $100 each way. Total is 2 x $150 = $300. Moving just three pounds into the carry-on cuts the round trip to $100. Under the 50 lb line, a 52 lb bag instead costs $80 each way.

Carry-on is included even on Basic Economy. American lets every passenger bring one carry-on of 22 x 14 x 9 inches and one 18 x 14 x 8 inch personal item. That separates it from airlines that charge for overhead-bin space, so a carry-on-only trip costs nothing in bag fees. Elite tiers add allowances: Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members can check three bags up to 70 lb each.

When comparing, treat the ticket date as part of the price. Plan your total with the bag cost calculator and price heavy bags in the overweight and oversize calculator. For cabin sizing and other routes, read the American baggage rules and see how Delta's fees compare.
