Where these numbers come from

Delta moved its domestic checked bag prices up $10 per bag for tickets purchased on or after April 8, 2026. The first bag is now $45 and the second is $55, each way. The third and later bags jumped from $150 to $200. The date that matters is when the ticket was issued, not the flight date, so an older ticket keeps its older price.

That ticket-date rule creates odd cases. A traveler who bought in March for a December trip still pays $35 and $45. Someone who buys next week for a flight tomorrow pays the new rate. If you rebook or exchange into a new ticket, check whether the new ticket date flips you into the higher table before you assume the old fee still applies.

Delta states a separate fee for each limit you break: size, weight and quantity. A domestic bag that is both 62 lb and 70 inches pays the $45 base, $100 for weight and $200 for size. That is $345 each way and $690 round trip for one suitcase. The airline refuses bags at 100 lb or 80 inches and over, so there is no price to pay your way out of those.

Worked example: a couple flies Atlanta to Boston and back with one checked bag each. They pay 4 x $45 = $180 in fees, compared with $140 under the old table. Add a third checked bag for the trip and it costs $200 each way, so a $400 round trip. A single extra bag is cheaper shipped ahead of time in many cases.

Free-bag routes depend on status and cards. Medallion members and eligible Delta Amex cardholders check the first bag free, and some Basic cardholders also get the second bag free. Key West flights are limited to one checked bag. Carry-on bags up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches stay free on most domestic fares, although Basic Economy on Europe routes is limited to a personal item.

Compare before you book. A Comfort or Main fare with no bag beats a bundle-priced rival only if you carry on. Run the numbers in the bag cost calculator, check the size side in the overweight and oversize calculator, and see the broader Delta baggage rules for cabin limits.
