How the Europe trip estimate works

Europe costs swing widely by country. Switzerland and the United Kingdom run far above Portugal or Czechia. This calculator multiplies the days you spend in each country by a daily per-traveler cost at the budget level you pick, then adds flights, trains between countries, insurance and the ETIAS fee.

The daily costs are planning examples covering lodging share, food, local transport and a few sights. They are not quotes, and you can override them with your own daily number. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. The euro moved to about $1.1355 per EUR on the ECB reference rate on 2026-09-30, which is a useful anchor for converting hotel quotes.

Default example: two travelers, 5 days each in the United Kingdom, France and Italy at mid-range, with $1,100 flights each, $300 for trains and short hops each, $80 insurance and the ETIAS fee. The daily costs add up to $190, $185 and $175 per person per day for those five days, or $2,750 per person on the ground. Add the rest and the trip is about $8,500 for two.

Two entry notes matter. US citizens can stay in the Schengen area for 90 days in any 180, and the Schengen 90/180 calculator tracks that. ETIAS, a EUR 20 authorization for adults, has been announced but was reported as not yet in operation on 2026-09-30, so you may owe nothing today. Trim the fee to zero for earlier trips. This is not legal or visa advice; confirm with official sources. Travel insurance, phone plans and city tourist taxes are extra lines many first-timers forget, so keep a little room in the plan. Shoulder seasons, from April to May and September to October, often bring lower hotel prices and thinner crowds than July and August. Trains between big cities can be cheap when booked early, while last-minute fares cost much more. Use the intercity field to test both cases.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • This site's ETIAS information page (eu-LISA, travel-europe.europa.eu and ECB reference rate, checked 2026-09-30). Note: daily costs per country and level, flights and insurance are editable planning examples

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

How long can I stay in Europe?

US citizens may stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area. Use the Schengen 90/180 calculator to count days.
