What a Hawaii trip really costs

Hawaii trips cost more than the flight and the hotel. Lodging taxes and fees stack, a rental car is priced by the day, and food and activities add up quickly. This calculator lets you set each piece for Oahu, Maui, Kauai or Hawaii Island and gives one total plus per-person and per-night figures.

The tax defaults are examples you can edit. The state transient accommodations tax is entered at 11 percent, reflecting the climate impact fee (the so-called green fee) that lawmakers added to the hotel tax for 2026, and the county surcharge at 3 percent. General excise tax is applied at 4.712 percent on Oahu and 4.5 percent elsewhere. We could not open the Hawaii Department of Taxation or Hawaii Tourism Authority rate pages during this build, so verify current rates at tax.hawaii.gov and gohawaii.com.

Default example: two travelers, 7 nights on Oahu, $700 flights each, a $300 room plus $35 resort fee, an $85 rental car with $25 fuel and parking for 8 days, $90 a day each for food and $250 each for activities. Lodging is $2,345 before roughly 18.7 percent in taxes. The whole trip lands near $7,000, or about $3,500 per traveler.

The biggest levers are the rental car and lodging. Skipping the car on Oahu and using rideshare in Waikiki can save several hundred dollars, though Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island usually need a car. A condo with a kitchen lowers the food line. Compare stay types with the hotel vs Airbnb calculator and see cost comparisons in the Europe trip cost calculator. Flights are the swing factor. Fares change by season, with summer and the winter holidays costing the most, and shoulder months in spring and fall often cost much less. Try a few flight prices in the calculator to see how much the season moves the total for the whole group.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • Hawaii Tourism Authority and Hawaii Department of Taxation rate information (hawaii.gov and gohawaii.com pages could not be opened for rates this run). Note: all prices, the 11 percent TAT, 3 percent county surcharge and GET rates are editable example defaults
  • verify before booking

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a rental car in Hawaii?

On Oahu you can often skip it if you stay in Waikiki. On the other islands most visitors rent one. Toggle the car input to see the difference.
