Where these numbers come from

JetBlue is the one major U.S. carrier here that prices checked bags by travel period. The first bag is $39 off-peak and $49 on peak dates. The second bag is $59 off-peak and $69 peak. If you add a bag inside 24 hours of departure, the price rises by $10 per bag. The fee change took effect at the end of March 2026.

Peak periods cover summer, spring break, Thanksgiving and winter holidays, so they account for roughly half the year. That makes the date of flight as important as the airline when you compare prices. A July trip uses the peak column even if you buy the bag months early. A February trip is usually off-peak.

Worked example: a traveler flies round trip with two bags in each direction during August. That is 2 x ($49 + $69) = $236. The same trip in February is 2 x ($39 + $59) = $196. Add both bags at the airport the day of travel and $10 per bag is added, which is 4 x $10 = $40 extra, for $276 on the peak trip.

Overweight and oversize bags each cost a flat $150 per bag, per direction. An overweight first bag in July pays $49 + $150 = $199 each way, or $398 round trip. A bag that is both overweight and oversize faces both charges, so $349 each way. Since the flat fees cover 51 to 99 lb, a bag at 52 lb costs the same add-on as one at 90 lb.

Cabin bags are the free part of JetBlue. The personal item (17 x 13 x 8 inches) and carry-on (22 x 14 x 9 inches) are free on every fare, including Blue Basic. A Blue Plus fare includes the first checked bag, so it can beat Blue Basic when the fare gap is under $39 or $49 each way. Mint includes two bags up to 70 lb.

Third bag prices differ between sources ($125 to $135 reported by one, $200 by another), so check at booking. Compare totals with the bag cost calculator, read the JetBlue baggage rules, and see Alaska's flat fees for a no-peak alternative.
