How the RV rental finder picks a class

The right RV class is the smallest one that sleeps your group and fits how you travel. This finder checks your party size against a typical sleeping capacity for each class, drops the travel trailer if you have no tow vehicle, and then prices what is left. The cheapest class that fits is shown first, with every class listed under it. Nightly rates are editable example defaults, not quotes, because rental prices swing with season, location and owner. Replace them with real listings, then compare with the RV rent vs buy calculator.

Total cost is the nightly rate times nights, plus mileage and generator overage on motorized classes, plus flat fees. Extra miles are planned miles minus the included miles per night times nights, charged per mile. Generator overage is planned hours minus included hours, times nights, charged per hour. Trailers skip both because you tow them on your own vehicle. The table shows the defaults used.

ClassTypical sleeping capacity usedExample nightly rate (editable)Mileage and generator fees
Class A motorhomeUp to 8$325Yes
Class B camper vanUp to 4$195Yes
Class C motorhomeUp to 6$225Yes
Travel trailerUp to 6, needs a tow vehicle$120No (you tow it)

Here is a worked example. Four people take a 5 night trip with no tow vehicle and plan 800 miles. Class B is the cheapest fit at $195 a night, or $975. Included miles are 100 times 5, or 500, so 300 extra miles at $0.35 add $105. The generator runs 4 hours against 2 included, so 2 extra hours over 5 nights at $3.50 add $35. Add $150 in other fees and the total is $1,265. A Class C comes to $1,415 and a Class A to $1,915.

Fees outside this math can change the ranking: campground nights, fuel, taxes, insurance and any security deposit. Bigger motorhomes also burn more fuel, which this finder does not price. For the full trip budget, use the RV trip cost calculator, and pack with the camping checklist generator. Check each owner's listing for their real mileage and generator terms before you book.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • Adventure Calcs planning math written for this page
  • no rental company was contacted. Note: nightly rates, included miles, mileage fee, generator fees and sleeping capacities are editable example defaults, not quotes

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

Which RV class is cheapest for a family of four?

With these example rates a Class B van or a travel trailer is usually the cheapest to rent, if they sleep your group. Class C and Class A cost more per night. Edit the rates to match your listings.

Do I need a tow vehicle for a travel trailer?

Yes. A trailer has no engine, so you need a vehicle rated to pull it. Choose no tow vehicle and the finder leaves trailers out.

Are the rates real quotes?

No. They are editable example defaults. Enter the nightly rate, included miles and generator terms from a real listing, then compare totals with the RV trip cost calculator.
