Where these numbers come from

On flights to and from the United States, Emirates counts pieces, not total kilograms. The fare you pick sets the count. A Special fare includes one checked bag up to 23 kg. Saver, Flex and Flex Plus include two bags of 23 kg each. Because the rule is per piece, unused weight in one bag does not help the other. Two 20 kg bags are fine. One 40 kg bag is not.

The cabin rule is short. Economy passengers may bring 7 kg in a bag of 55 x 38 x 22 cm. Emirates does not define a separate personal item on that page, so the safest plan is to keep everything you carry on board inside the 7 kg. Nothing may sit behind your legs, in the aisle or in front of emergency exits, so it must fit under the seat or in a bin. A full-size US carry-on of 22 x 14 x 9 inches is close, but its depth of 9 inches is a little over the 8.7 inch limit.

Size matters as much as weight. Each checked bag may total 150 cm (59 inches) when you add length, width and height. That is shorter than the 62 inch limit many US airlines use, so a large suitcase that passes at home can trip the oversize fee here. Bags between 150 and 203 cm pay extra, and anything above 203 cm must ship as cargo.

Worked example. You fly Saver with two bags, and one weighs 26 kg. Emirates lists $75 for overweight on Americas routes, so each direction costs $75 and the round trip costs $150. If that same bag is also over the size limit, the combined overweight and oversize fee of $250 applies per direction, or $500 round trip. Buying a third bag instead costs $125 to $325 at the airport for tickets issued after September 8, 2026, depending on route, so weigh that against the fees. Emirates says buying extra baggage in advance saves 15 percent on piece routes.

The piece figures are the ones to trust for planning. Emirates does not publish one fixed price for every route and confirms the exact amount in Manage Your Booking. For context, Middle East carriers like Qatar Airways use a similar two-bag system to the Americas. Run your own counts in the total bag cost calculator.
