Where these numbers come from

JetBlue keeps both cabin bags free on every fare, including Blue Basic. The carry-on may be 22 x 14 x 9 inches, and JetBlue says it has no weight restriction as long as you can lift the bag into the bin yourself. The personal item is tighter at 17 x 13 x 8 inches, which is smaller than American's 18 x 14 x 8 limit. Measure a backpack before you rely on it.

Checked bags are priced by timing and by season. Off-peak, the first bag is $45 and the second is $59. During peak periods, or when you pay within 24 hours of departure, the first bag is $49 and the second is $69. Peak dates include summer, the winter holidays and spring break. A third bag is $200. Mint and Mosaic customers have free bags, and some card members get the first bag free.

A worked example shows how much timing matters. A couple flies round trip with two bags each person. Off-peak, each person pays $45 + $59 = $104 each way, so the pair pays $416 round trip. At peak prices each person pays $49 + $69 = $118 each way, or $472 for the pair. That $56 gap comes from nothing except the travel dates, so it pays to check the calendar on JetBlue's fee page.

Weight and size rules differ from other carriers. JetBlue's standard checked bag is 50 pounds, and from 51 to 99 pounds one flat charge of $150 applies, rather than two tiers of $100 and $200. Oversize bags from 63 to 80 inches also cost $150. That means a 52-pound first bag costs $45 + $150 = $195 off-peak, and a 90-pound bag costs the same, so repacking to 50 pounds matters most.

Against the rivals, JetBlue's first bag matches Delta and Southwest at $45, but its second bag is $4 more, and its peak rates climb higher. Its free carry-on on Blue Basic is a real advantage over United, where the same ticket type excludes it. Fees can change with peak calendars, so read the current table before you book.

Try the total bag cost calculator to total a whole itinerary, or use the overweight and oversize fee calculator for a heavy bag. Compare JetBlue with United and Delta, or open the JetBlue baggage fees page.
