How this camping trip cost estimate works

A camping budget has five parts: the site, getting there, food, small daily extras and fees or gear. This calculator adds them in that order. The campsite line is your nightly fee times the number of nights. Gas is the round-trip cost you enter, which you can work out from miles, miles per gallon and the pump price. Food runs for one more day than you have nights, because you eat on arrival day and departure day. Use it early in planning, before you reserve, so you can test a cheaper site, a shorter stay or a closer drive.

Here is a worked example with the default numbers. Four people camp three nights at $35 a night, so the site costs $105. A 240-mile round trip at 22 mpg uses about 11 gallons, or roughly $38 at $3.50. Food at $18 per person for four days is $288. Firewood and ice at $12 a night adds $36. A reservation fee and a day-use pass together add $28. The total lands at $495, about $124 per person.

Every price here is an editable example, not a quoted rate. Public campground fees swing from free dispersed sites to well over $60 a night at popular state and private parks. Hook-ups, premium sites and holiday weekends cost more. Replace the defaults with the number on your reservation page. If you are weighing a tent against a room, run the same trip through the camping vs hotel cost calculator to compare totals side by side.

Food is usually the biggest flexible line, so plan it before you book. Use the camping food and water calculator to size your groceries and water jugs, and the camping checklist generator to catch gear you would otherwise buy at a camp store. If you tow a trailer or drive a motorhome, switch to the RV trip cost calculator, which adds propane and tolls.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • Arithmetic from your inputs (site fees x nights + gas + food + extras). Note: campsite, food and firewood prices are editable examples, not quoted rates
  • no campground price page was opened in this build

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a weekend camping trip cost?

With the defaults, a three-night trip for four people comes to about $500, or around $125 per person. A two-night trip for two people using a low-cost site can cost much less. Change the inputs to match your plan.

Does the estimate include camping gear?

Only if you add it to the fees, rental and permits line. The default assumes you already own a tent, stove and sleeping bags. Add rental or new purchases there, then see the pack weight calculator if you are carrying it.

Why does food use one extra day?

You eat on the day you arrive and the day you leave. Three nights means four days of food. The calculator counts nights plus one so your grocery line is not too low.
