Where these numbers come from

Alaska Airlines raised checked bag fees for bookings made on or after April 10, 2026. The first bag moved from $40 to $45, the second from $45 to $55, and the third and later bags from $150 to $200. The airline also removed the $5 discount that used to reward paying ahead of time. A bag now costs the same online as at the airport.

That last change matters for planning. At most airlines, timing still moves the price, so Alaska is simpler: the decision is only whether to check, not when to pay. For a couple with one bag each on a round trip, the cost is 4 x $45 = $180. Two bags each is 2 x 2 x ($45 + $55) = $400.

Overweight and oversize fees stack on the base price. A 58 lb first bag costs $45 plus $100, or $145 each way. A 72 lb bag pays $200 on top. An oversize bag from 63 to 115 inches adds a flat $200. Alaska does not accept bags past 100 lb. The published tiers are steady, so weighing your bag is the best cost control.

Alaska's Saver fare keeps the free carry-on and free personal item that many carriers strip from their cheapest tickets. The carry-on limit is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, or 45 linear inches, and Alaska does not publish a personal item dimension. That means a carry-on-only trip costs no bag fees on the lowest fare, which is the cheapest way to fly Alaska.

Status and cards change the math. Atmos Rewards Visa holders get the first bag free for themselves and up to six guests on the reservation. First Class passengers check two bags free at up to 70 lb each, and Club 49 members have larger allowances. Intra-island Hawaii travel has its own table of $30, $40 and $50.

One caution: combined oversize-and-overweight examples in secondary sources vary, so treat stacked totals as estimates and confirm on the fee calculator at booking. Run your plan through the bag cost calculator and compare with United's prices, or read the Alaska baggage rules hub for cabin details.
