How overweight and oversize fees are charged

Two limits apply to a checked bag: how much it weighs and how big it is. Weight is the simple one. Most US airlines allow 50 lb, and a bag over that pays a fee for the band it falls into, commonly 51-70 lb and 71-100 lb. Size is measured in linear inches, which is length plus width plus height. The common limit in our data is 62 linear inches. Fee data is as of 2026-09-30. Spirit Airlines ceased operations on 2026-05-02 and is not listed.

The table shows the limit and the surcharge for every airline, with a link to its page. A value marked not published means the airline does not list a fixed figure we could verify. The tools skip that airline for that check instead of guessing.

A worked example: a 55 lb bag measuring 28 x 18 x 12 inches is 58 linear inches. It is under the 62 inch size limit, so there is no oversize fee. The weight is over 50 lb, so on American Airlines the 51-70 lb band of $100 applies each way. On a round trip that is $200. If the same bag were 30 x 20 x 14, it would measure 64 linear inches and trigger the oversize fee on top.

Premium cabins and some international carriers allow 70 lb, and the weight limit in the tool changes with the airline. Before you pay a fee, try moving heavy items into a carry-on or personal item and check that they fit with the does my bag fit finder. To add the surcharge to the base bag price, use the total bag cost calculator, or convert sizes with the linear inches calculator.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • American Airlines checked bag fees and policies
  • Delta baggage policy and fees
  • JetBlue optional services and fees
  • Southwest optional travel charges
  • Frontier bag options
  • Adventure Calcs airline hub pages (as of 2026-09-30). Note: airlines change bag fees often and some publish ranges
  • confirm the price at checkout before you pay

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure linear inches?

Add the length, width and height of the bag in inches, including wheels and handles. The linear inches calculator does the sum for you.

Do airlines charge both overweight and oversize fees?

Some do. Delta states that separate fees apply for each limit a bag exceeds. The tool adds both, so the result can be a high estimate for airlines that charge only one.

What if the tool says not published?

The airline does not list a fixed fee for that weight band or size. Check the airline baggage page or ask at the counter before you travel.
