Where these numbers come from
Sun Country sells its cheapest seats without an overhead bag. Every fare includes one personal item that fits under the seat, about 17 x 13 x 9 inches. A roller bag for the bin is an add-on, and so is each checked bag. This page lists the typical prices we verified on 2026-09-30; Sun Country sets exact amounts by route and by how early you buy.
Timing drives the price more than anything else. Reports that quote the airline's bag pricing tool put a carry-on at roughly $25 to $40 when you add it during booking, about $50 afterward, and $55 plus a $10 handling fee at the gate. The first checked bag follows the same pattern at $30 to $40, then $50, then $55 plus $10. A second or third checked bag is a flat $45 at booking and $60 later.
Here is a worked example. Two adults fly a round trip, each with one carry-on and one checked bag, all bought at booking. At the low end that is ($25 + $30) x 2 directions = $110 per person, or $220 for the pair. At the high end it is ($40 + $40) x 2 = $160 per person, $320 for two. Skip the carry-on and use only a personal item and you cut that by about $50 to $80 per person.
Watch the limits. A checked bag is allowed 50 pounds and 62 linear inches (length plus width plus height). Excess fees were restructured in September 2025 and now run about $25 to $100 depending on how far over the bag is, so a 52-pound bag costs far less than an 85-pound one. Sources disagree on the exact tier boundaries, so use the airline's own calculator before you pay. Carry-ons are capped near 35 pounds and gate agents do check sizers on full flights.
Ownership changed in 2026. Allegiant finished buying Sun Country on May 13, 2026, but both brands keep operating separately, with their own loyalty programs, for up to about two years. We found no announced change to Sun Country's bag rules. Compare it with Allegiant, which also charges for carry-ons, and run your own trip through the bag cost calculator. To test your actual bag, use the bag-fit checker.
Two discounts are worth knowing. The Sun Country Visa is reported to take 50 percent off the first checked bag booked online, and active-duty military with a Common Access Card get free checked bags. If you travel to Canada, Jamaica or Puerto Rico, reports note a higher 70-pound checked limit, but confirm that for your route before packing heavy.
