How the camping checklist counts your gear

A checklist is only useful if the counts match your group. This generator starts from your nights, people, season and camp style, then scales each line. One tent does not fit six people, and a four-night trip needs more underwear than a one-night trip. The result is grouped into shelter and sleep, clothing, kitchen, water, safety and light, hygiene and extras, with a count for each group and a grand total. Use it as a planning list, then cross off what you already own. For trip money, pair it with the camping trip cost calculator.

The rules behind the counts are simple and listed here so they exist even with JavaScript off. They are planning defaults, not a standard from any agency. You can see each rule and judge whether it fits your style.

ItemRule used in the generator
Tents1 per 3 people car camping, 1 per 2 people backpacking, none for RV
Sleeping bags and pads1 each per person; season sets the bag rating or adds a pad layer in winter
Underwear, socks, shirts1 set per day up to 7 pairs (4 backpacking); shirts up to 5 (3 backpacking)
Stove fuel1 canister per 8 person-days, at least 1
Cooler1 per 18 person-days (car and RV only)
Water jugs1 jug per 5 person-days (car and RV); filter plus 2 bottles each (backpacking)
Headlamps1 per person; spare batteries 1 set per 2 people
First aid kits1 per 6 people
Trash bags1 per 2 nights, plus 1

Here is a worked example. Four people, two of them kids, go car camping for 3 nights in summer and cook at camp. The generator plans 2 tents, 4 sleeping bags, 4 pads and 4 pillows. Clothing uses 4 days, so each person gets 4 pairs of socks and 4 of underwear. Food and water follow from 4 days: 48 meals and 16 gallons of drinking and cooking water at 1 gallon per person per day. Change any input and the whole list recounts.

Season and style change the list more than trip length. Winter adds cold-rated bags, an insulating pad layer, gloves, beanies and hand warmers. Backpacking drops the cooler, chairs and camp table, and swaps water jugs for a filter and bottles. RV mode replaces the tent and bags with bedding, leveling blocks, chocks and hookup cords. For food and drink volumes, use the camping food and water calculator, and for carried weight see the pack weight calculator.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • Adventure Calcs planning rules written for this page
  • no agency publishes one packing formula. Note: every count is an editable planning estimate, so check local fire rules, bear rules and campground gear requirements

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

How many sets of clothes should I pack for camping?

Plan one set per day up to about 5 shirts and 7 sock and underwear pairs for car camping. Backpackers cap lower, at 3 shirts and 4 pairs, and re-wear clothes. The generator applies these caps.

How much water do I need per person per day?

The generator plans 1 gallon per person per day for drinking and cooking when you can drive in. Backpackers carry about 2 liters each and filter the rest. See the hiking water calculator for hot or strenuous days.

Does the checklist change for kids?

Yes. Each kid adds two spare outfits, a comfort item and a game or book. Kids still count as people for tents, bags, pads, meals and water.
