How cruise gratuities are calculated

Most lines charge a daily crew gratuity for every guest, billed to the stateroom account. The math is rate times guests times nights, so a longer sailing or a bigger group scales the total in a straight line. Suites often pay a higher rate, and some lines offer a small discount if you prepay before sailing. This calculator lets you pick your line, cabin type and payment timing, or type your own rate. Gratuities are one of the few cruise costs that are nearly fixed, so they are easy to budget once you know the rate. They still add up: a family of four on a 10-night trip can owe several hundred dollars.

Rates on file come from line pages recorded in this site's data, checked 2026-09-30. Lines with a verified rate today: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity, MSC, Disney, Holland America, Virgin Voyages, Margaritaville at Sea. For every other line the box uses an editable example of $16 per person per day, labeled as an example. Enter your line's current rate in the override box, since gratuities are raised from time to time.

Here is a worked example. Two guests on a 7-night Holland America sailing in standard staterooms pay $18 each per day. That is 18 x 2 x 7, or $252 in total and $126 per person. A suite at $20 would make it $280. Virgin Voyages lists $22 on board or $20 prepaid, so a 7-night trip for two saves $28 by paying ahead. Drinks, specialty dining and spa services can carry a separate service charge, so this total is only the crew gratuity. Budget for those charges separately, and remember that some lines let you adjust the daily amount once you are on board.

Line-specific figures change, so confirm before you book. See the full context in the cruise cost calculator and test drink service charges in the drink package calculator.
