Mondopoint sizing and flex, explained

Ski boots are sized in mondopoint, a metric system. According to the Wikipedia entry on the system, it is based on foot length in millimeters, and a label such as 280/110 means a 280 mm long and 110 mm wide foot. Ski boots usually drop the width and print the length in centimeters, so a 27.5 is a foot about 275 mm long. This finder measures your foot in inches, or converts a US shoe size, and rounds to the nearest half size.

Shoe sizes convert with the common Brannock rule. Men's size equals three times the foot length in inches minus 22, and women's size equals three times the length minus 21. A 10.75 inch foot is 273 mm, which rounds to a 27.5. Full mondopoint steps are half sizes, so try the size above and below as well. Here are example lengths.

Flex is the stiffness number on the boot cuff. Higher is stiffer and more powerful, lower is softer and more forgiving. Brands do not measure flex the same way, so these ranges are common fitter rules of thumb, not a standard. The finder takes the middle of your ability range, then moves it down 10 for light skiers and up 10 for heavy ones. Light means under 140 lb for men or 115 lb for women. Heavy means over 200 lb or 165 lb.

Intermediate80 to 10070 to 90
Advanced100 to 12090 to 110

Take the result to a fitter. A boot that matches your foot length can still be wrong for your width, instep or calf. Shell fit is one check fitters use: remove the liner and see how much room sits behind your heel. To size skis and snowboards, see the ski size calculator and snowboard size calculator. To convert any size directly, use the mondopoint converter, and budget the trip with the ski trip cost calculator.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • Wikipedia, Mondopoint (length in millimeters, label format, 5 mm steps)
  • Wikipedia, Ski boot (boots sized in mondopoint). Note: flex ranges and the weight adjustment are common boot-fitter rules of thumb and vary by brand, and the shoe-size conversion is the Brannock rule

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

What mondopoint size should I buy if I am between sizes?

Try both half sizes and pick the one that holds your heel without pressing your toes. Performance skiers often choose the smaller size, and comfort skiers the larger one. A fitter can also stretch the shell.

What flex should a beginner choose?

This finder uses 60 to 80 for men and 50 to 70 for women. Softer boots flex easily and forgive mistakes. Heavier beginners move up by about 10, lighter ones down by about 10.

Is mondopoint the same as shoe size?

No. Mondopoint is foot length in centimeters and does not vary by brand the way shoe sizes do. Convert one to the other with the mondopoint converter.
