Where these numbers come from

Air France describes cabin baggage as a small bag plus, on most fares, one hand baggage item. In Economy the two together may weigh up to 12 kilograms (26.4 pounds). The small bag is 40 x 30 x 15 centimeters and goes under the seat. The hand baggage piece is up to 55 x 35 x 25 centimeters including pockets and wheels. On Basic fares only the small bag is included.

Checked bags depend on fare and cabin. Its US fee page says Economy passengers on standard fares get zero or one checked piece of up to 23 kilograms, depending on the fare. A third-party roundup from 2024 reported that the Light fare charged about $80 online and $100 at the airport for a first bag, but we could not confirm a current Light price, so this page uses the standard fare with one included bag.

The USD extras on the airline's US site are clear. A second checked bag on USA to Europe transatlantic routes is $75, and a heavy bag from 23 to 32 kilograms is also $75. A third and further bag is $285 each. Short-haul and intra-Caribbean flights are $55 for a second bag and $200 for a third, and other long-haul routes are $100 and $200.

Here is a worked example. A traveler flies Boston to Paris and back with a second checked bag and one of the two bags weighs 60 pounds. The second bag costs $75 x 2 directions = $150. The heavy bag fee adds $75 x 2 = $150. The total is $300 beyond the free first bag. Add a third bag and it climbs by $570 round trip, so pack into two bags.

Timing and prepayment matter. The page offers a 20 percent reduction when additional baggage allowance is bought online, and notes that Canada and USA flights have identical online and airport prices. Oversized bags between 158 and 300 centimeters go to a special counter and are priced by itinerary at the airport. See Lufthansa and British Airways for other transatlantic options, then use the bag cost calculator.

Bags over 32 kilograms are not carried as normal baggage. Flying Blue status adds free bags, and Business and La Premiere get larger 32 kilogram allowances. Check the overweight and oversize fee calculator before you leave if your suitcase is close to the limit.
