How the three ways to move compare

You can move your belongings three main ways. Full-service movers load, drive and unload for a bundled price. A rental truck gives you the vehicle while you supply the driving and the labor. A container service drops a box at your door, you fill it, and the company hauls it to your new address. Each has hidden costs, so this calculator lists them.

For movers, the tool uses the same example pricing as the moving cost calculator: a rate per cubic foot plus a rate per mile, with optional packing, insurance and tips. For the truck, it adds a daily fee, a mileage charge, fuel from miles per gallon, insurance, hotel nights on the road and paid helpers. For the container, it adds delivery, transport by the mile, monthly rent and helpers.

Here is the default example, an 800-mile move of 900 cubic feet. Movers come to about $4,200 including insurance and tips. The truck costs about $2,650 in fuel, rental, mileage, insurance, lodging, helpers and supplies. The containers, two of them at 650 cubic feet each, come to about $3,120. The truck wins on price, but it asks the most from you.

Edit the rates to match real quotes before trusting the order. The container total also depends on how many months you keep the box on site, so a slow move-out can erase its advantage. Ask every company about deposits, late fees and the delivery window before you book. Fuel price, truck class and the number of days change the truck total fast, while container price depends on the route and season. Do not forget the cost of your time, risk to your back and damage you cover yourself. This page is informational only, not insurance or legal advice. If you are leaving the country, use the international container setting instead.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • Adventure Calcs editable example rates and the moving cost calculator's example pricing. Note: no rental company or mover quote was opened
  • every fee, rate and container size is a labeled example to replace with real quotes

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the rental truck usually cheapest?

You supply the driving and most of the labor, so the price leaves out your time. Add paid helpers and lodging, as this tool does, to see the fuller cost.

How many containers do I need?

Divide your load in cubic feet by the usable space in each container. The tool rounds up. A 900 cubic foot load needs two containers of 650 cubic feet each.

Are these real PODS or U-Haul prices?

No. They are labeled example rates you can edit. Get current written quotes from each company. This is informational, not insurance or legal advice.
