Where these numbers come from

Icelandair's rules follow the European pattern: a weight-limited cabin bag, a small personal item and a checked bag that depends on the fare. On international flights every passenger may bring one cabin bag measuring 55 x 40 x 20 centimeters, or about 22 x 16 x 8 inches, plus a personal item of 40 x 30 x 15 centimeters. The cabin bag may weigh 10 kilograms, or 22 pounds. Domestic and Greenland flights drop that limit to 6 kilograms.

The 10-kilogram cap is the number that catches American travelers, because U.S. airlines rarely weigh cabin bags. A typical roller weighs 7 to 9 pounds empty, so once packed it can easily pass 22 pounds. Guides report that the airline checks cabin bag size at the gate, particularly at Keflavik. Weigh your packed bag at home, and keep laptop, jacket and heavy items in the personal item if needed.

Checked bags follow the fare. Economy Light includes none, Economy Standard and Flex include one bag of 23 kilograms (50 pounds), and Saga Premium and Flex include two bags of 32 kilograms (70 pounds). The 62-linear-inch size limit matches the U.S. standard. Nothing heavier than 32 kilograms is accepted, and fees for overweight bags of 24 to 32 kilograms are paid at the airport, according to one 2026 guide.

Extra bags start from about $60 when bought online, according to a guide updated in June 2026, and cost roughly 20 percent more at the airport. Prices vary by route. We could not read the airline's own fee tables, and the published overweight and oversize dollar amounts we found are from 2023, so we do not list them. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates.

A worked example shows why fare choice matters. On Economy Light, a couple each adding one 23-kilogram bag at about $60 each way would pay about $240 in bag fees on a round trip. If the Standard fare costs less than $120 more per person than Light for the same dates, it is the cheaper route. Connecting through Reykjavik with a stopover can mean paying extra-bag fees on each flight segment.

Compare the result with other carriers in the total bag cost calculator, and test a bag against the smaller personal item limit with the bag fit finder. For a European comparison, see Aer Lingus and KLM.
