Choosing paddle length and kayak length

Paddle length depends on two things: how tall you are and how wide the boat is. A wide boat puts the water farther from your hands, so you need a longer paddle. A tall paddler needs one for the same reason. The chart below is the sizing chart published by REI for kayak paddles, and this finder reads it for you from your height and boat width in inches.

Paddler heightBoat under 23 in23 to 28 in28 to 32 inOver 32 in
Under 5 ft210 cm220 cm230 cm240 cm
5 ft to 5 ft 6 in215 cm220 cm230 cm240 cm
5 ft 6 in to 6 ft220 cm220 cm230 cm250 cm
Over 6 ft220 cm230 cm240 cm250 cm

Take a 5 ft 8 in paddler in a 26 in wide boat. Height 68 in falls in the 5 ft 6 in to 6 ft row, and 26 in falls in the 23 to 28 in column, so the chart gives 220 cm, about 86.6 in. On a boundary the finder picks the shorter cell, which matches the REI advice that when you fall between two sizes it is generally better to go shorter. Paddlers with a short torso sometimes want more reach.

Kayak length class is separate math. First find the load: paddler weight plus gear. Divide it by the load factor, 75 percent by default, to get the minimum rated capacity. A 170 lb paddler with 30 lb of gear needs about 267 lb. The factor is an editable planning number, not a rule from a maker. Then pick a length class by where you paddle.

Longer boats track straighter and glide farther, and shorter ones turn faster and store easier. The class is a starting point because capacity ratings vary by model, and the label on the boat is the number to trust. For stand-up boards see the paddleboard size guide, and for trip money see the camping trip cost calculator if you plan to paddle and camp.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • REI Expert Advice, kayak paddle sizing chart by paddler height and boat width. Note: the load factor, the 300 lb step-up and the length classes are planning defaults, and capacity ratings vary by model

Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

What paddle length is best for a 5 ft 6 in paddler?

In a boat 23 to 28 in wide the REI chart gives 220 cm for both the 5 ft to 5 ft 6 in row and the 5 ft 6 in to 6 ft row. In a 28 to 32 in boat it is 230 cm.

What if I fall between two paddle sizes?

Go shorter. The shorter paddle is lighter and easier to swing, and the finder picks the shorter cell on a boundary.

How is kayak capacity figured here?

Add your weight and gear weight, then divide by the load factor. The default 75 percent leaves room so the boat sits well. Check the maker label, and see the pack weight calculator for gear totals.
