How the bag fit check works

This finder compares your bag with the published limit for each airline and shows pass or fail. For a carry-on or personal item it sorts your three measurements from longest to shortest and compares them with the airline box the same way. That means a bag can be rotated to fit, which matches how a sizer at the gate works. For a checked bag it adds length, width and height and compares the total with the airline linear-inch limit. Limit data is as of 2026-09-30. Spirit Airlines ceased operations on 2026-05-02 and is not listed.

The table lists every limit used, with a link to each airline page. A value marked not published means the airline does not list a fixed figure we could verify. The tools skip that airline for that check instead of guessing.

Example: a bag that measures 22 x 14 x 9 inches passes the 22 x 14 x 9 in carry-on limit on American Airlines, Delta and most other US carriers, but fails on the tighter international limits that run near 21.7 x 15.7 x 9.1. Add an inch of depth from an overstuffed pocket and it fails almost everywhere. Personal item limits are smaller, near 17 x 13 x 8 at several airlines, and a few airlines such as Delta and Southwest publish no personal item size at all.

A pass here means the size fits, not that the bag will be waved through. Gate staff measure with wheels and handles, and some airlines add a weight limit for cabin bags. If a bag fails the cabin limit, price the checked option with the total bag cost calculator or see which airline charges least with the cheapest airline for my bags tool. Use the inches to cm converter if your bag is labeled in centimeters.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • American Airlines checked bag fees and policies
  • Delta baggage policy and fees
  • JetBlue optional services and fees
  • Southwest optional travel charges
  • Frontier bag options
  • Adventure Calcs airline hub pages (as of 2026-09-30). Note: airlines change bag fees often and some publish ranges
  • confirm the price at checkout before you pay

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the finder check bag weight?

No. It checks size only. Some airlines set a cabin bag weight limit, and every airline sets a checked bag weight limit. Use the overweight and oversize bag fee calculator for weight.

Why do some airlines say not published?

The airline gives no size for that item, or gives a total in centimeters we could not split into three measurements. We skip them instead of guessing.

Can I rotate the bag to make it fit?

Yes. The finder compares the longest side to the longest limit, and so on. The gate sizer works the same way, but it includes wheels and handles.
