Where these numbers come from

Cathay Pacific ties its checked allowance to the fare. The fare page lists Light with one piece of 23 kg, and Essential and Flex with two pieces of 23 kg each. All three carry the same cabin allowance of one piece at 7 kg. Some routes and frequent flyer tiers change the numbers, and one third-party guide reports two pieces on direct Americas flights, so the baggage calculator on the airline site is the final word for your ticket.

The airline allows one carry-on and one small item for any passenger with a reserved seat. Its own page names small handbags, laptop bags, small backpacks, camera bags and briefcases, but does not list sizes. The sizes in the table, 56 x 36 x 23 cm for the carry-on and 40 x 30 x 15 cm for the small item, come from a Cabin Zero guide. A common US roller of 22 x 14 x 9 inches fits, as long as it weighs under 7 kg.

Extra weight and size are priced by piece, not by kilogram. North America routes list $200 to $260 for an additional piece depending on the zone pair. An overweight bag, up to 32 kg or 70 pounds, costs $150. An oversize bag from 158 to 203 cm costs $200. Anything above 32 kg or 203 cm needs approval from Customer Care in advance, with at least three working days of notice.

Worked example, round trip on Essential with two bags, one at 28 kg. The overweight fee is $150 per direction, so the round trip costs $300 on top of the fare. On Light with two bags, the second bag is the extra piece at $200 to $260, which is $400 to $520 round trip. That gap often makes Essential cheaper. If the fare step from Light to Essential is under about $400, buy Essential and skip the extra-piece fee.

Cathay is a Hong Kong carrier, so transpacific rules apply on US routes. Compare with Singapore Airlines, which includes two bags in Economy to the USA, and with Hawaiian for Pacific flights. Use the total bag cost calculator to add fares and fees together before you book.
