Aer Lingus Baggage Rules: Transatlantic Carry-On and Checked Bag Fees

Where these numbers come from

Aer Lingus is one of the few transatlantic carriers that publishes a full online price list in dollars. On North America flights, every passenger may bring a carry-on bag of up to 10 kg measuring 55 x 40 x 24 cm, plus a personal item of 40 x 30 x 20 cm. The bag goes in the overhead locker subject to space. The personal item goes under the seat in front. Europe routes are stricter, where the 10 kg bag must be part of your fare or be checked.

Checked bags cost extra on the Saver fare, and the price depends on the weight you choose when you book online. A 20 kg bag is $54.99, a 25 kg bag is $59.99 and a 30 kg bag is $64.99. Other fares pay a bit more online: $74.99, $79.99 and $84.99 for the same three weights. Pick the weight at booking. Adding 5 kg online costs only $5, which is far cheaper than an airport penalty.

The airport rate is the trap. A bag paid at the desk costs $100 for up to 23 kg, and excess weight from 24 to 32 kg is also $100 per bag. So one 25 kg bag prepaid online on Saver is $59.99, while the same bag at the airport is $100. Worked example, round trip with one 25 kg bag each way on Saver. Online it is 2 x $59.99, or $119.98. At the airport it is $200, a gap of about $80. The page lists three bags per passenger as the Europe-route maximum, so check your itinerary for a North America limit.

Note what the source does not list. It shows per-bag online prices but no separate second-bag price, and it gives no oversize fee or linear-inch limit, so those cells are blank in the calculator. Ask before you travel with sports gear or an over-size case. For comparison, Virgin Atlantic bundles a bag into Classic fares, while British Airways prices by fare family.
