Where Should I Retire Abroad? A 7-Question Quiz

Seven questions about budget, climate, language, healthcare, visa effort, pace and distance match you to a region, with monthly costs from our own data.

Retiring abroad is one of the biggest money decisions many Americans make, and the answer depends on a few plain facts. How much do you have to spend each month? What climate and language can you live with? How much healthcare, paperwork and distance from family are you willing to accept? This quiz turns those questions into a match with one of six regions, using the monthly budgets and visa notes already published on this site.

The seven questions cover monthly budget, climate, language, healthcare, visa effort, pace of life and distance from the US. Each answer adds points to the regions it supports, and the region with the most points wins. A fixed tiebreak order settles close scores. Every region can win under some set of answers, and no single answer beyond the first decides the result.

The first question is a budget gate. The lowest one-person budget in our data is $615 a month, the tight budget for the Philippines. If your reliable monthly income is below that, no region in the data is realistic without help, so the quiz sends you to a separate result about building savings or earning part-time income abroad first. That result also lists the income tests that visa routes in the data require, so you can see the size of the gap.

The six regions are Southeast Asia on a budget, led by the Philippines with Thailand and Vietnam as comparisons; Latin America, covering Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Mexico City; Costa Rica; southern Europe, covering Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece; Japan; and the English-speaking pair of Ireland and Canada. Each result page shows the monthly budget for one person and for a couple, the entry and visa note for a US citizen, and the health insurance line, with links to the detailed country pages.

Budget figures come from Numbeo price data converted at European Central Bank reference rates on 30 September 2026. Some countries have a full low, mid and high budget. Others have a city-proxy figure built from city-centre rent plus typical costs, which runs higher than a low budget, so read each cell's label. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Visa rules and thresholds change often, so each result points you to the official source rather than treating a figure as final.

How to read the results. Every result page repeats the same three checks so you can compare regions fairly. First, the budget line: does your reliable monthly income cover the figure for one person or a couple, with a margin left over? Second, the entry line: what can a US citizen do on arrival, and what must be filed in advance for a longer stay? Third, the health line: what does insurance cost in the budget, and what does a private benchmark cost for someone your age? A region that passes all three is worth a visit of several weeks. A region that fails one is not ruled out, but you should know which line to fix and what it costs, and the comparison table on each result page puts those lines side by side.

A quiz cannot know your taxes, pension, health history or family situation. It narrows a wide field to a short list and gives you numbers to test in the calculators. This quiz is informational only and is not legal or financial advice. Once you have a match, run your savings and income through the calculator that shows how long your money lasts abroad, then price the move itself. The quiz takes about two minutes, and you can retake it with different budget or visa answers to see how the match moves.
