Where these numbers come from

Avelo keeps the base fare low by leaving almost everything out of it. Each ticket includes one personal item, which must fit under the seat ahead of you at 17 x 13 x 9 inches. A standard roller bag for the overhead bin is a paid add-on, and every checked bag is paid too. We read these figures on Avelo's own help and optional-services pages on 2026-09-30.

Avelo lists a carry-on at $52 to $75 and a checked bag at $47 to $75, per person, per direction, for bags bought during the first reservation. The range reflects the route and the date. Adding a bag later through Manage Trips or at the airport costs more, and the airline says so directly. Buying every bag at booking is the single best way to hold the total down.

Take a worked example. One traveler flies round trip with a carry-on and a checked bag. At the low end that is ($52 + $47) x 2 = $198. At the high end it is ($75 + $75) x 2 = $300. Add a 55-pound checked bag and the overweight charge of $100 each way adds $200, which can push the bag fees well above the ticket price.

The hard limits matter. A checked bag is free of surcharges up to 50 pounds and 62 inches in overall dimensions. Between 51 and 70 pounds costs an extra $100, and so does a bag from 63 to 80 inches. A bag that is both overweight and oversize draws both charges. Nothing over 70 pounds or 80 inches travels at all, so a heavy piece of sports gear may need another carrier.

Who flies free? Active-duty military with a valid ID get one free carry-on and two free checked bags. Holders of the Avelo World Elite Mastercard are reported to get a complimentary carry-on on each flight. Otherwise, compare with bigger carriers on the same route using the cheapest airline for my bags calculator, because a cheap Avelo fare plus two paid bags can land near a legacy fare. Check your bag dimensions with the bag-fit checker before you leave home.

Outerwear, mobility aids and breast pumps do not count against your allowance, per the airline's carry-on page. If you want cost figures for a full party, try the bag cost calculator and set Avelo's range to see the spread.
