How the hotel vs Airbnb math works

A nightly rate is only the start. A hotel adds occupancy tax, often a resort or destination fee, and parking. An Airbnb adds a one-time cleaning fee, a guest service fee and local lodging taxes. This calculator puts every line on both sides so you compare what you pay at checkout, not the headline rate.

Airbnb explains that its total reservation price can include the host nightly rate, cleaning fee, extra guest fee, pet fee, an Airbnb service fee and local or value-added taxes. It also states that where hosts use the single fee structure, no guest service fee is charged. Because the guest fee varies by listing, the 14 percent default is an example you should replace with the figure on your booking screen.

Here is the default example. A family of four stays 4 nights. The hotel needs 2 rooms at $169, with a $25 resort fee, 12 percent tax and $30 parking. The Airbnb costs $230 a night plus a $110 cleaning fee, a 14 percent service fee and 12 percent tax. A kitchen lets the group skip some restaurant meals, worth $12 per guest per night in the example. The tool totals both options and shows the gap.

Read the per-person number as well as the total. A large group usually splits one Airbnb cheaply but fills several hotel rooms. A solo traveler or couple often does better in a hotel, because the cleaning fee is spread over fewer nights and people. Short stays of one or two nights magnify the cleaning fee. Try changing nights to see where the answer flips. Pair it with the camping vs hotel calculator for outdoor trips. Also remember what a hotel gives you that an Airbnb may not, such as daily cleaning, a front desk and flexible cancellation. Those have value, but this tool counts dollars only. If the gap is under about 10 percent, pick the stay that fits your group, location and schedule better.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • Airbnb Help Center, How the total price of a reservation is calculated (airbnb.com/help/article/125, opened 2026-09-30). Note: the 14 percent service fee, tax rates, resort fee and kitchen savings are editable examples, not quotes

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

Does Airbnb always charge a service fee?

No. Airbnb states that listings on the single fee structure do not charge guests a separate service fee. Others split the fee, so check the price breakdown before you book.

Are resort fees taxed?

Often yes, and this tool applies the occupancy tax to the room rate plus the resort fee. Some places tax differently, so verify on the hotel quote.

How do I estimate kitchen savings?

Count meals you would cook, such as breakfast and a few dinners, and subtract grocery cost from restaurant cost. Also see the camping vs hotel cost calculator for a similar approach.
