Where these numbers come from

WestJet publishes fees in Canadian dollars. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. We converted once at 0.7048 US dollars per Canadian dollar, the Bank of Canada daily average for September 29, 2026, so the USD column is a static estimate, not a live rate.

The fee story has two steps. WestJet's fee tables, for tickets bought from September 16, 2025, list Econo prepaid bags on Canada and US flights at CA$45 to $53 for the first and CA$60 to $71 for the second. On April 23, 2026 the airline added $5 to prepaid first and second bags, $10 at the airport, and $50 to excess, overweight and oversized fees, according to Daily Hive. We added those increases to get the figures in the table, so they are estimates.

Fare type decides what you get free. Econo, Member Exclusive, EconoFlex, Premium and Business fares include one carry-on of 22 x 9 x 14 inches and one personal item of about 16 x 6 x 13 inches. UltraBasic includes only the personal item, unless you fly to Europe or Asia or buy Extended Comfort. No carry-on weight limit is published; you must be able to lift it into the bin alone.

Here is a worked example in ticket currency. A traveler on Econo prepays one first bag and one second bag each way: (CA$50 + CA$65) x 2 directions = CA$230, about US$162. If the second bag weighs 58 pounds, add roughly CA$200 to $227 each way for the excess charge. That single overweight bag would nearly triple the trip's baggage bill, which makes repacking worth the effort.

Paying later costs more. Online check-in and airport prices sit well above the prepaid rate, and the older table showed airport first bags near CA$70 to $83 on Econo. Third and fourth bags are not sold prepaid. Compare with Air Canada in the bag cost calculator, and check your suitcase size with the bag-fit checker.

The airline says price ranges exist because taxes vary by departure airport. Because WestJet raised fees twice within a year, verify your exact amount in the booking flow before you rely on any estimate here.
