How the cruise packing counts work

Cruise packing goes wrong in two ways: too much for a week of shore days, or too little for formal nights and a cold deck. This generator turns your nights, formal nights, climate and laundry plan into counted items, so you pack to the itinerary rather than to the suitcase. Airline baggage limits apply to the flight to the port, so weigh your bags at home. A shorter list also makes embarkation day easier, since you carry your own bags on board or to the porter. Pack medications, chargers and one outfit in your carry-on in case checked luggage arrives late to the cabin.

The method starts with clothing days, which is your nights plus one. If you plan to wash clothes, the tool reduces the number of day outfits. Bottoms are about half the tops, underwear and socks are one per day plus a spare, and sleepwear is one set per three days. Formal nights replace casual evening outfits, and dress shoes appear only if you have a formal night. Climate changes the rest: warm trips add swimsuits and sandals, cool trips add rain jackets and warm layers.

Here is the default example. A 7-night warm-climate cruise with 2 formal nights and no laundry covers 8 clothing days. That means 8 day tops, 5 bottoms, 5 casual evening outfits, 2 formal outfits, 9 pairs of underwear and socks, 3 sleepwear sets, 3 swimsuits, 2 sandals, walking shoes and dress shoes, plus sun gear and chargers. An Alaska trip drops swimsuits and adds rain jackets, fleece layers and gloves. Change the climate box to see the counts move.

Line-specific figures change, including dress codes, so check your line's current rules. Packing lists pair with the cruise cost calculator for budgeting and the best time to cruise finder for weather. Line pages: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity, MSC, Disney, Holland America, Virgin Voyages, Margaritaville at Sea.

Where these numbers come from

The formulas and default values in this calculator are based on:

  • Adventure Calcs packing rules of thumb (clothing days, laundry reductions and per-item ratios). Note: all counts are editable starting suggestions, not line requirements

This is a planning estimate, not medical, legal or immigration advice. Fees, allowances, limits and entry rules change, so confirm the figures with your airline, cruise line, customs agency or the official government source before you book or travel, and follow their rules if they differ from this page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need formal clothes on every cruise?

No. Dress codes vary by line and sailing. Set formal nights to zero if your line has none, or to the number your itinerary lists.

Are these counts for each person?

Yes. The first number is per person. The group total multiplies it by your guests.

What about documents and medications?

The list counts clothing and gear only. Carry your passport or required ID and any medications in your carry-on. Check your line's document rules.
