Where these numbers come from

Delta tells passengers to bring one carry-on and one personal item, and it defines the personal item only by example. The official list names a purse, briefcase, small backpack, belt bag, fanny pack, camera bag, diaper bag or laptop bag, and it allows anything of similar or smaller size. The test is that the bag fits under the seat in front of you. There are no inch measurements, and no weight limit appears on the page.

The carry-on is different. Delta gives a firm 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit, with the three sides together no more than 45 linear inches, and wheels and handles count. That leaves a small gap, because 22 plus 14 plus 9 is 45 exactly, so a bag at the full length and width has no room to bulge. Jackets, umbrellas, duty-free purchases and food bought after security travel as extras.

To judge whether your bag will slide under a seat, start with the space itself. One 2026 guide puts the usual footwell at roughly 20 x 15 x 11 inches, yet the same source points out that airlines set their limits below that. Another guide notes that Delta publishes no figure and suggests treating 17 x 13 x 8 inches as safe. We use the same target, and it is guidance, not a Delta rule.

Worked example: a 16 x 12 x 8 inch backpack stuffed with a laptop and a sweater measures 16 x 12 x 9 inches once packed. The extra inch of depth is the risk. Removing the sweater or wearing it keeps the depth at 8 inches. A soft tote of 17 x 13 x 7 inches can be pushed under most seats, while a hard 18 x 14 x 9 inch case may not go.

Flight type changes the answer. On regional jets of 50 seats or fewer, Delta says only personal items that fit under the seat are allowed, and larger bags are checked at the gate. Bulkhead rows have no under-seat storage, so the bag goes overhead. If a gate agent questions your bag, compress it, move items into pockets or your carry-on, or accept the gate check. Keep medicine, chargers and valuables in a small pouch in case the bag is tagged.

Check your bag in the bag fit finder. Read the full Delta baggage rules and Delta baggage fees, or compare with American's 18 x 14 x 8 inch box.
