Where these numbers come from

United's personal item is the tightest of the big U.S. carriers: 17 inches long, 10 inches wide and 9 inches deep. Some sources write it 9 x 10 x 17 because the long side can go upright. The volume is 1,530 cubic inches, versus 2,016 for an 18 x 14 x 8 bag. That 10-inch width is the limit most backpacks miss.

Worked example: a common 18 x 12 x 8 inch laptop backpack feels like a personal item, but it fails United twice, at 18 inches long and 12 inches wide. A 16 x 10 x 8 inch slim daypack passes. Choosing a bag by its advertised size matters more here than at airlines with a bigger box, since one inch on two sides is enough to fail.

Fare type changes the stakes. On domestic Basic Economy tickets the personal item is the only free cabin bag. A full carry-on brought to the gate costs $75, made up of the $50 checked bag fee plus a $25 handling charge. Travelers on standard Economy, elite members, qualifying card holders and some international routes also get the carry-on of 22 x 14 x 9 inches.

Extra items do not count. A jacket, an umbrella, food bought after security, a camera, a diaper bag, a car seat and mobility devices may travel alongside the personal item. That helps: a coat worn or carried separately frees 1 or 2 inches of depth in the bag itself. Try to keep a purse inside the personal item instead of adding a second bag.

How to measure: pack the bag with its real load, lay it on the floor, and measure each outside dimension at its widest point with a soft tape. Include pockets, straps and wheels. Soft-sided bags often compress, so pressing on the bag for one second before you measure gives a fairer test. If any side is over, you can choose to prepay a checked bag at $45 and skip the gate test.
