Where these numbers come from

Italy, measured by Rome, is cheaper than Spain, measured by Madrid, by $264 a month for one person. Renting a city-centre one-bedroom, a single American needs about $2,576 in Madrid and $2,312 in Rome, a 10% difference worth $3,167 a year. A couple needs about $3,419 versus $3,181. Both cities are capitals, so this says little about smaller towns in either country. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Local-currency figures were converted once to static dollars at these rates: euro at $1.1344. Each rate is the one implied by Numbeo's own dollar display of the same city page, dated to that page's update (September 2026). Other cities were read in dollars directly.

Rent again explains the gap. Central one-bedrooms cost $1,521 in Madrid and $1,226 in Rome, so Italy saves $296 on housing. The rest of the budget points the other way: Numbeo's non-rent estimate is $1,054 in Madrid and $1,086 in Rome, so Italy costs $32 more day to day. Utilities run $191 in Madrid against $210 in Rome, and the transit pass is $37 against $40. The four-staple basket is $69 in Madrid and $89 in Rome, with Rome's chicken and eggs noticeably dearer.

Because Italy's saving is all housing, it grows when you rent outside the centre. A single renter there pays about $2,237 in Madrid and $1,962 in Rome, so Italy's lead widens to $275 a month. For a couple the lead is $238, slightly narrower than for a single person because the higher Italian daily costs are doubled. Anyone who expects to eat out or cook heavily should weigh that $32 gap before committing to Rome.

Nothing separates the two on entry. Each is in the Schengen area, so the State Department says Americans can visit without a visa for 90 days in any 180. Spain asks for a passport valid three months beyond departure, with six months recommended, and proof of funds plus a return ticket. Italy asks for three months of validity and two blank pages. Spain's page also says to declare EUR 10,000 or more in cash, and Italy's lists a EUR 10,000 cash limit. We could not verify income thresholds for either country's long-stay visa in this review; confirm them with the consulate. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.

For a renter who will spend most of the month near home, Rome's $264 edge is real. For someone who lives in restaurants and markets, the gap closes.
