Where these numbers come from

Medellin is slightly cheaper than Mexico City, but the lead is small and depends on which line you look at. We use Medellin as the Colombian proxy because it is a major expat city with a Numbeo page we could read. A single person with a city-centre flat needs about $1,848 a month in Mexico City and $1,782 in Medellin, so Colombia saves $66 (4%). A couple pays about $2,474 against $2,410, a $64 gap. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Local-currency figures were converted once to static dollars at these rates: peso at $0.00029664; peso at $0.05525. Each rate is the one implied by Numbeo's own dollar display of the same city page, dated to that page's update (September 2026). Other cities were read in dollars directly.

Housing is the headline. City-centre rent is $1,064 in Mexico City and $995 in Medellin, a $69 difference. Utilities and transit run the other way: $62 in Mexico City against $156 in Medellin, and a monthly transit pass is $20 against $74. Those are already inside Numbeo's non-rent estimate, which is nearly identical at $783 versus $786. So the whole gap comes from rent. The four-staple basket costs $79 in Mexico City and $69 in Medellin.

Numbeo itself flags a caveat for Mexico City: commenters on the page say listed prices are well below what newcomers pay, particularly in popular neighborhoods, with some suggesting real costs 50 to 100 percent higher. We report the listed numbers, but if those comments are right the ranking could flip. Conversely, a short list of contributors in Medellin means a wider error band. Outside the centre the figures are $1,458 versus $1,397, a similar $61 lead for Colombia.

Entry rules favor Mexico. The State Department says no visa is needed for visits under 180 days and air travelers receive a digital permit on arrival. Colombia allows 90 days or less, 180 cumulative per calendar year, and requires the free online Check-Mig form 1 to 72 hours before your flight. Colombia advises a passport valid at least six months and may ask for a return ticket. Long-stay income thresholds for both countries could not be verified in this review; check the consulate pages. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.

The practical call is a close one: $795 a year for one person in Medellin, in exchange for half the visa-free time and a pre-flight form. Read the pages for Mexico City and Colombia, compare Colombia with Ecuador, and run your savings through the abroad money calculator.
