Where these numbers come from
Athens beats Rome on cost by $490 a month for one person, and nearly all of that comes from rent. A single American with a city-centre one-bedroom needs about $2,312 in Rome and $1,822 in Athens, a 21% saving in Greece worth $5,879 a year. A couple pays about $3,181 versus $2,687, so the gap is $494 a month. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Local-currency figures were converted once to static dollars at these rates: euro at $1.1344. Each rate is the one implied by Numbeo's own dollar display of the same city page, dated to that page's update (September 2026). Other cities were read in dollars directly.
The spending lines are almost identical. Everyday costs for one person are $1,086 in Rome and $1,081 in Athens, a difference of only $5. Utilities are $210 and $216, and a transport pass is $40 in Rome against $31 in Athens. The four-staple basket is $89 versus $80. Rent is the only big lever: $1,226 in central Rome against $741 in central Athens, a $485 gap.
That matters for how you plan. Central Athens rent is only $88 above its outside-centre rent ($653), so Greek neighborhoods barely change the budget. In Rome the same choice saves $350, bringing a suburban single renter to about $1,962 versus $1,734 in Athens. Even then Greece stays ahead by $228. Because daily costs are equal, anyone who can cut rent wins the most in Rome.
Both are Schengen members, so Americans get 90 days in any 180 without a visa. The State Department asks for a passport valid three months beyond departure in both, plus two blank pages for Italy, and mentions proof of funds and a return ticket. Greece's migration ministry lists a residence permit category for economically independent persons but shows no euro threshold on that page, and we could not verify Italy's elective-residence threshold, so confirm with each consulate. In short, Greece is the cheaper Mediterranean base on rent alone, while Italy is pricier by a steady $494 for couples. The single-country pages cover detail: Italy and Greece.
