Where these numbers come from

Ecuador is much cheaper than Colombia in this comparison: about $1,065 a month for one person in Quito against $1,782 in Medellin. That is a $717 monthly saving, 40% of the Colombian total and $8,603 a year. A couple needs roughly $1,530 in Quito and $2,410 in Medellin, a $880 gap. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Local-currency figures were converted once to static dollars at these rates: peso at $0.00029664. Each rate is the one implied by Numbeo's own dollar display of the same city page, dated to that page's update (September 2026). Other cities were read in dollars directly. Quito was read in dollars directly. We use Medellin as the Colombian proxy, so Bogota would differ.

Rent is half the story: a city-centre one-bedroom costs $483 in Quito and $995 in Medellin, a $513 difference. The other half is living costs, which Numbeo puts at $582 in Quito and $786 in Medellin, so Ecuador saves $204 there as well. Utilities are a standout: only $29 in Quito for an 85 sq m flat against $156 in Medellin. A monthly transit pass is $21 against $74. The four-staple basket costs $47 in Quito and $69 in Medellin.

Outside the centre the gap stays wide. A single renter pays about $895 in Quito and $1,397 in Medellin, a $502 difference. Ecuador's Numbeo page lists rent ranges of $400 to $693 in the centre, so even the top of Quito's range beats Medellin's average. The caveat is data depth: Quito's page was last updated on 2026-09-22 and Medellin's has a modest contributor pool, so confirm neighborhood prices with local listings before committing.

Entry rules work against Ecuador here. The State Department says Americans need an approved visa before traveling if they want more than 90 days in any consecutive 12-month period, and the months need not be consecutive. Colombia allows 90 days or less per visit and up to 180 cumulative days per calendar year, and requires the free Check-Mig form 1 to 72 hours before your flight. Passport validity is six months beyond arrival for Ecuador and recommended for Colombia. We could not verify the income thresholds for either country's long-stay visas in this review. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.

If you are planning a long stay, Ecuador's annual saving of $8,603 for one person is large, but the 90-days-per-12-months clock means you should line up a visa early. Colombia gives more flexibility for repeated short visits.
