Where these numbers come from

Vietnam is the cheaper base, and the gap is large enough to matter. A single person with a city-centre one-bedroom needs roughly $1,374 a month in Bangkok and $1,080 in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnam saves $294 a month, which is 21% less and $3,529 over a year. A couple pays about $1,935 in Bangkok against $1,475, a $461 monthly difference. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Local-currency figures were converted once to static dollars at these rates: baht at $0.02979. Each rate is the one implied by Numbeo's own dollar display of the same city page, dated to that page's update (September 2026). Other cities were read in dollars directly.

Both budgets are low by US standards, but the mix differs. City-centre rent is $672 in Bangkok and $586 in Ho Chi Minh City, a $86 difference. Everything else for one person is $702 against $494, so Bangkok costs $208 more even before rent. Utilities are nearly equal ($106 and $104), but a monthly transport pass is $35 in Bangkok and only $12 in Ho Chi Minh City. The four-staple basket is $47 versus $39.

Living outside the centre pushes Vietnam's lead to the same order: $1,045 in Bangkok versus $796 in Ho Chi Minh City for a single renter, a $249 gap. Numbeo's Vietnamese rent figures come from ranges, so treat them as midpoints and expect bargaining room in either direction.

What Vietnam saves in money it can cost in paperwork. The State Department says Americans can stay in Thailand 60 days without a visa, with the option of the officials cutting that to 30, and pre-arrival online registration is required. Vietnam needs a visa for most visits, which Americans get as an e-visa from the official government portal, and the passport must have six months of validity left. Thailand also warns about repeated border runs: entry may be refused after two or three arrivals a year. Long-stay thresholds for either country were not readable on the official pages in this review, so confirm them with the Thai consular department or the Vietnamese portal. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.

For a short trial, Thailand's easier entry may be worth the premium. For a base you intend to keep for a year, Vietnam's $3,529 annual saving is hard to ignore, and it is larger than a typical round-trip airfare home.
