Where these numbers come from

Costa Rica comes out cheaper in the city-centre case, but Panama flips the result when you rent away from the centre. With a central one-bedroom, San Jose totals about $1,946 a month for one person and Panama City about $2,133, so Costa Rica saves $187 (9%). A couple pays about $2,749 versus $2,818, a gap of $69. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Local-currency figures were converted once to static dollars at these rates: colon at $0.0021934. Each rate is the one implied by Numbeo's own dollar display of the same city page, dated to that page's update (September 2026). Other cities were read in dollars directly.

The reason is the split between housing and daily life. Panama City rent is $1,277 for a central one-bedroom, $335 above San Jose's $942. Daily spending runs the opposite way: $856 in Panama City against $1,004 in San Jose, a $148 advantage to Panama. A two-person budget multiplies the daily part, so the couple gap narrows to $69 from $187 for a single person.

Outside the centre, the order reverses. A single renter pays about $1,763 in San Jose and $1,738 in Panama City, so Panama is $26 a month cheaper. Utilities also differ: $95 in San Jose and $131 in Panama City, but a transport pass costs $66 against $21. The four-staple basket favors Panama slightly, $65 versus $90. The Panama City page is quoted natively in US dollars, which removes exchange-rate risk for a dollar earner; Costa Rica's figures were converted from colones.

Entry is similar. The State Department lists up to 180 days without a visa for both countries. Costa Rica says the stay is not guaranteed and requires an onward ticket; Panama says the 180 days is strictly enforced, asks for $500 in cash or equivalent, and wants a return ticket. Long-stay residency thresholds were not verified in this review for either country, so confirm them with each immigration authority before relying on any figure you read elsewhere. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.

Choose by lifestyle. A centrally located renter who likes walkable neighborhoods saves $2,244 a year in Costa Rica; someone happy in an outlying suburb saves $307 a year in Panama.
