Where these numbers come from

The Philippines is cheaper than Thailand on these two city pages, but by less than the gap between Thailand and Vietnam. A single person with a city-centre one-bedroom needs about $1,374 a month in Bangkok and $1,126 in Manila, a saving of $248 (18%) or $2,973 a year. A couple pays about $1,935 versus $1,596, a $340 gap. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Local-currency figures were converted once to static dollars at these rates: baht at $0.02979. Each rate is the one implied by Numbeo's own dollar display of the same city page, dated to that page's update (September 2026). Other cities were read in dollars directly.

Rent again drives it. Central one-bedrooms cost $672 in Bangkok and $539 in Manila, a $133 difference, and outside the centre the figures are $343 and $281. Daily costs are a bigger gap than you might expect: Numbeo's non-rent estimate is $702 in Bangkok against $587 in Manila, leaving the Philippines $115 cheaper even before housing. Utilities are the exception. Manila runs $123 for an 85 sq m flat and Bangkok $106, so electricity is dearer in the Philippines.

Transport is cheaper in Manila, with a monthly pass at $35 in Bangkok and $13 in Manila. Groceries favor Bangkok slightly on the four-staple basket: $47 versus $50 in Manila, where chicken is the main extra cost. Outside the centre a single renter pays about $1,045 in Bangkok and $868 in Manila, a $177 gap. Manila's rent range is wide ($382 to $796 centrally on Numbeo), so the midpoint is less certain than a single figure.

Visa-free time runs the opposite way. The State Department says Americans get 60 days in Thailand without a visa, with pre-arrival online registration, while the Philippines allows stays under 30 days without one. A longer Philippine stay needs an extension or another visa, and the State Department page also mentions an Emigration Clearance Certificate that some foreign nationals need before leaving. Thai officials can refuse entry to people who arrive more than two or three times a year. We did not verify long-stay income thresholds for either country. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.

For a month-long scouting trip, Thailand's 60 days is more comfortable. For a cost-first multi-year base, the Philippines saves $2,973 a year per person. Compare the pages for Thailand and the Philippines, weigh the Thai option against Vietnam, and test your reserves in the abroad money calculator.
