Where these numbers come from

Canada is substantially cheaper than Ireland on these two city pages: about $2,626 a month for one person in Toronto against $3,731 in Dublin. That is a $1,104 monthly saving, 30% of the Irish total and $13,252 a year. A couple needs roughly $3,447 in Toronto and $4,723 in Dublin, a $1,275 gap. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Both city pages were read directly in US dollars, so no extra conversion was applied. Both cities were read in US dollars directly, and both are big, pricey metros, so smaller cities will usually be cheaper.

Rent creates most of the difference. A central one-bedroom costs $2,490 in Dublin and $1,600 in Toronto, a $891 gap. Dublin's outside-centre rent is $2,238, only $252 below its central price, so leaving the centre saves little in Ireland. Toronto's outside-centre figure is $1,431. Everyday costs add $214 more in Dublin: $1,240 against $1,026. Utilities are $282 in Dublin and $123 in Toronto, more than double.

Transit and groceries are close. A monthly transit pass costs $109 in Dublin and $110 in Toronto. The four-staple basket costs $92 in Dublin and $95 in Toronto, so Canada is slightly dearer on food staples there, particularly milk. The decision is therefore housing and utilities. Even with outside-centre rents, a single renter pays about $3,478 in Dublin and $2,457 in Toronto, a $1,021 monthly gap.

Entry terms are more favorable in Canada for a long visit. The State Department says Americans need no visa for up to 180 days in Canada, and the Canadian government's page says US citizens do not need an eTA. Ireland allows up to 90 days, requires a passport valid for the stay, and Irish border officials have refused travelers who could not explain their plans. Ireland's immigration service says a retirement route exists for people who are financially independent, but its page gives no euro threshold, and we did not review Canadian long-stay options. Check both governments before planning beyond a visit. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.

For most budgets the answer is Canada, unless Irish citizenship ties or employment make Dublin non-negotiable.
