Where these numbers come from

Colombia sits in the middle of this group on price but near the top on value for a city lifestyle. Numbeo, updated 27 September 2026, puts a one-bedroom at COP 2,238,750 in a city centre and COP 1,413,790 outside one. At 3,367.25 pesos per dollar (the rate on Numbeo's currency page, fed by ECB data, 30 September 2026) that is about $665 and $420. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates.

Monthly budgets for one person are $1,048, $1,322 and $1,709 for low, mid and high, and $1,482, $1,874 and $2,468 for a couple in one home. Numbeo's own estimate is $708 a month before rent. Bogota does better than the national average, with a city-centre flat near $590 and $675 a month for one person, so the capital is no dearer than the country average.

For visas, the Foreign Ministry's visa-types page lists a digital nomad visa in the V category that asks for bank statements showing income of at least three monthly minimum wages (SMLMV) over the last three months. The 2026 minimum wage is COP 1,750,905 (Trading Economics), so the test is COP 5,252,715 a month, about $1,560. The page also carries Migrant (M) categories, but we could not read their amounts, so check them with Cancilleria.

Worked example: a remote worker earning $3,000 a month clears the $1,560 test by nearly double. Their mid budget of $1,322 a month leaves about $1,678 to save, and because the peso is weak against the dollar, rent and dining stretch further than the numbers suggest. A retiree with only Social Security of $2,000 a month also clears the income figure, but the digital nomad visa is aimed at remote workers, so the M pensioner route may fit better.

Health cover is the main moving part. International Living reports retired expats paying $70 to $85 a month per couple for EPS public insurance, calculated at 12.5% of declared income with no maximum age to enroll. Private plans often cap entry at age 60, and house-call add-ons cost about $25 a month. We use $35, $43 and $68 for one person and $70, $85 and $135 for a couple.
