Where these numbers come from

Ecuador is the cheapest page in this set and, like Panama, it runs on the dollar. The U.S. State Department's country page says Ecuador has been fully dollarized since 2000, so no conversion is needed and the rate is 1.00. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Numbeo, updated 22 September 2026, lists a one-bedroom at $374 in a city centre and $273 outside one, and estimates $512 a month for one person before rent.

Our budgets for one person are $744, $922 and $1,206 for low, mid and high, and $1,092, $1,374 and $1,859 for a couple in one home. Utilities plus internet are just $71 a month, and a transit pass is $21. For a cross-check, International Living's Cuenca sample for a couple totals $1,905, including a $600 two-bedroom, a $100 weekly maid and $250 for dining, so our mid couple figure is leaner.

The visa is temporary residence for rentistas, filed on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal. You show monthly income from abroad of at least three unified basic salaries (SBU); the 2026 SBU is $482, so the test is $1,446 a month, plus $250 a month for each dependent. The fee is $50 to apply plus $270 for the visa, cut by half for applicants 65 and older, and the visa lasts two years. Documents must be apostilled or legalized.

Worked example: a couple with $2,400 a month in pensions needs $1,446 + $250 = $1,696 for the main holder and one dependent, so they pass. They then spend about $1,374 a month at mid budget, leaving roughly $1,026. Initial fees for the holder are $320, or $160 after the age-65 discount. The portal page covers rentistas specifically, so a pension-based category may have different terms; confirm with the ministry.

Health options are unusually cheap. International Living reports private policies at $50 to $150 a month for ages 50-70 (about $70 for a 60-year-old man), and buying into the IESS social security system for around $75 a month, or 17.6% of claimed income for pension visa holders. We use $50, $75 and $150 for one person and double them for two. Older applicants may face higher premiums. This is general information, not legal or financial advice. Run your own numbers in the how long will my money last abroad calculator and compare Panama or Colombia.
