Where these numbers come from

This page prices a month in the Philippines for an American who is moving, not visiting. The source is crowd-reported Numbeo data, refreshed on 28 September 2026, converted once at 1 peso = $0.01595, the ECB cross rate of 30 September 2026. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Numbeo puts a one-bedroom at about $323 in a city centre and $185 outside it, and estimates $508 a month for one person before rent.

Our budgets split that $508 into utilities, transport, groceries and dining, then add rent and health. The result for one person is $615 on a tight budget, $791 in the middle and $1,066 with a city-centre flat and more eating out. A couple sharing one home lands at $887, $1,147 and $1,581. The food split and the 0.8x to 1.3x spread are our assumptions, so treat every total as an estimate.

Utilities stand out. Numbeo lists about PHP 6,405 for electricity, water and garbage plus PHP 1,704 for internet, near $129 together, which is large next to a $13 transport pass. Hot-climate cooling is a likely reason, so a smaller unit or a cooler highland town can cut that line. Transport is the cheapest item, since a monthly pass costs only PHP 800.

The retiree route is the Special Resident Retiree's Visa. The Philippine Retirement Authority lists SRRV Classic for ages 40 and up. At 50 or older, a pensioner deposits $15,000 and a non-pensioner $30,000, with pension proof of at least $800 a month for one person or $1,000 with dependents. Processing is $1,500 and the annual fee is $360 for the holder and two dependents. The Courtesy version needs only $1,500 to $6,000 on deposit. Ask the PRA about refund and withdrawal terms before you commit.

Worked example: a 57-year-old couple with a $1,800 monthly pension qualifies on the pension test, so the Classic deposit is $15,000. First-year cash is $15,000 + $1,500 + $360 = $16,860, then about $1,147 a month mid budget, or $13,764 a year. PRA also lists an exemption from tax on pensions and annuities for holders, but confirm your own US tax position.

On health, the Universal Health Care Act sets PhilHealth at 5% of monthly income, with a floor of PHP 10,000 and a ceiling of PHP 100,000. That is PHP 500 to PHP 5,000, or $8 to $80 a month, and we use $8, $24 and $80 for low, mid and high. PRA notes a special PhilHealth rate for SRRV holders without giving a figure. Frequently asked questions

How much does an American need per month in the Philippines?

Our estimate is $615 (low), $791 (mid) and $1,066 (high) for one person, and $1,147 mid for a couple. Rent and air conditioning drive most of the spread.

What is the SRRV and who can get it?

It is the Special Resident Retiree's Visa run by the Philippine Retirement Authority for people aged 40 and older. The Classic version needs a deposit of $15,000 to $50,000 depending on age and pension, per the PRA page.

Is health cover expensive?

PhilHealth premiums are set by law at 5% of monthly income between PHP 10,000 and PHP 100,000, so roughly $8 to $80 a month for a direct contributor. Private hospital plans cost more and are not priced here.
