Where these numbers come from
This page prices the capital, not the country. Numbeo's Mexico City page, updated 27 September 2026, lists a one-bedroom at MXN 19,266 in the centre and MXN 12,214 outside it. At 1 peso = $0.05517 (ECB cross rate from 20.5816 pesos and 1.1355 dollars per euro, 30 September 2026) that is about $1,063 and $674. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Numbeo estimates MXN 14,166, or $785, a month for one person before rent.
Our monthly budgets for one person are $1,379, $1,753 and $2,191, and for a couple $1,903, $2,421 and $3,046. Rent is the swing factor: the city centre costs about 58% more than outside it. Everything else is cheap, including basic utilities plus internet at MXN 1,751 (about $97) and a monthly transport pass at MXN 360 (about $20).
Visa rules work differently from a single national threshold. The Mexican consulate network posts its own requirements, and the amount is tied to a multiple of the minimum wage, so it varies by office and year. International Living reports roughly $2,400 to $2,700 a month over six months, or about $45,000 in savings, for temporary residency, and about $7,100 a month or $180,000 for permanent residency. We could not open the consular rule page itself, so treat these as a range and confirm with your consulate.
Worked example: a couple with $4,000 a month clears the reported temporary-resident income range. At the mid budget of $2,421, they would spend about $29,052 a year and keep roughly $18,948 of it. A single person with $2,600 a month only just meets the lower end of that range, so rent outside the centre becomes the practical choice.
Health cover is priced by age. International Living reports that voluntary IMSS enrollment for residents runs about $63 a month at 50-59, $89 at 60-69 and $93 at 70-79, with most treatments and drugs free once you pay. We use $63, $89 and $93 for one person and double them for a couple. Private plans are not priced here. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.
