Where these numbers come from

Canada is the most expensive country in this set outside Ireland. Numbeo, updated 30 September 2026, lists a one-bedroom at CAD 1,803 in a city centre and CAD 1,591 outside it, or $1,271 and $1,121 at 1 Canadian dollar = $0.70506 (ECB, 30 September 2026). Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Its estimate for one person before rent is $1,010 a month, and a transport pass is CAD 104.

Our budgets for one person are $2,035 low, $2,385 mid and $2,863 high. A couple sharing one home needs $2,674, $3,250 and $4,055. The gap between city and outside rent is only about $150, so moving out of the core saves less than in Europe.

Immigration is the real question, because Canada has no retirement visa. The Government of Canada says US citizens need no visa or eTA to enter and should carry a passport. A visitor who wants to stay longer applies for a visitor record, at least 30 days before the current status ends. The border officer sets the stay length. The pages I opened describe no income test for visitors and none for retirees.

Working is separate. The same guidance states that a work permit is not a visa and that most foreign workers need entry authorization, so a remote job for a US employer is not something to assume is allowed. Settling long term would run through a work, study or permanent-residence route, none of which this page prices. Ask the IRCC before you plan a multi-year stay.

Health cover is the other catch. Visitors are not covered by provincial plans, so a retiree or remote worker would buy private visitor cover. Ratehub reports about CAD 100 to 300 a month for travelers aged 60 and over, with pre-existing conditions raising the price. We use CAD 100, 200 and 300 ($71, $141 and $212) and double them for a couple. Policies are trip-based, so long stays need repeated renewals.

Worked example: a couple renting outside a city core spends about $2,674 a month, or $16,044 for six months, before any visitor-record fee. This is general information, not legal or financial advice. Use the how long will my money last abroad calculator for your own savings, and compare Ireland through Ireland vs Canada.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an American need per month in Canada?

Our estimate is $2,035 (low), $2,385 (mid) and $2,863 (high) for one person. Rent outside the core saves little.

Do Americans need a visa or eTA to visit Canada?

No. The Government of Canada says US citizens need neither a visa nor an eTA, and should travel with a valid passport.

Can I extend my stay as a visitor?

You apply for a visitor record, which is not a visa, at least 30 days before your status expires. The pages I opened state no retirement or income-based route.
