Where these numbers come from

Ireland is the priciest country in this set. Numbeo, updated 28 September 2026, lists a one-bedroom at EUR 1,589 in a city centre and EUR 1,403 outside it, or $1,804 and $1,594 at 1 euro = $1.1355 (ECB, 30 September 2026). Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Its estimate for one person before rent is $1,156 a month, and a monthly transport pass is EUR 95.

Our budgets for one person are $2,617 low, $3,051 mid and $3,739 high. A couple sharing one home needs $3,294, $4,000 and $5,171. Basic utilities of EUR 218 plus EUR 47 internet come to about $300, the highest in the set. Rent is the dominant line.

The route for retirees is Stamp 0 permission, for people of independent means. A 2025 law-firm summary says a single applicant needs verifiable annual income of EUR 50,000 ($56,775), and a married couple EUR 100,000 ($113,550), with speculative investments not counting. You also need access to a lump sum for emergencies, and private medical insurance with full cover. Working is not allowed, though passive income and voluntary activity are.

Permission is granted annually and renewable while you meet the conditions, and a 2026 law-firm guide says applications should go in about four months before expiry. The summary gives a typical processing time of 4 to 6 months. I could not open the official Irish immigration page because the address returned an error, so confirm the current amounts with the Immigration Service Delivery guidance before relying on them.

Worked example: a retired couple with $5,000 a month ($60,000 a year) falls far short of the EUR 100,000 couple test, even though their mid budget of $4,000 a month ($48,000 a year) is affordable. The income test, about $113,550 for a couple, is well above the cost of living, which is the main hurdle with this visa.

On health, Cornmarket's 2026 guide lists annual private premiums from about EUR 500 to 900 for entry plans up to EUR 2,100 to 3,500 or more for comprehensive cover aimed at over-50s. We use EUR 500, 1,500 and 3,500 a year, or $47, $142 and $331 a month. Older joiners may face loadings. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.
