Where these numbers come from

Roatan is really two cruise ports in one. Mahogany Bay is a private-style terminal that fits two very large ships at a pier. Coxen Hole is the older public port: one ship can berth at the pier and two more anchor offshore, which means tender boats for those passengers. Knowing which port your ship uses is the first step to an accurate budget.

Mahogany Bay has a short path to its beach area, and the Tour Base guide suggests adding 5 to 10 minutes to exit the gates entirely. Taxi prices there are controlled by zone. Going to Coxen Hole or French Harbour costs $20 per cab in Zone A, while West End and West Bay in Zone C cost $15 per person with a two-person minimum. That means a couple pays $30 one way to reach West Bay from Mahogany Bay.

Coxen Hole has a short walk to the taxi area, but prices are negotiable. The rate sheet lists $20 for one person and $25 for two to West Bay, West End or French Harbour, and $10 each for three or more riders. Sandy Bay is $15 for one and $20 for two. Rates follow destination zones, not mileage, and are quoted in dollars.

Worked example, four friends to West Bay from Coxen Hole. Three or more riders pay $10 each one way, so four riders spend $40 and $80 round trip. The same trip from Mahogany Bay at $15 per person costs $60 one way and $120 round trip. The difference is $40 round trip, which is why some groups walk between ports or use a pre-booked van.

Worked example, a snorkel day. Two travelers who book the $79 snorkeling excursion pay $158. Adding a $14 flying beach chair each at Mahogany Bay brings it to $186. A two-tank dive at $145 each is $290. A kayak and snorkel trip from $55 each is $110, which is the lowest sampled price for a guided reef outing.

Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. Although lempira is the official currency, dollars are accepted almost everywhere, so you rarely need to exchange money. To compare another western Caribbean stop, read the Belize or Costa Maya pages and then use the cruise excursion budget calculator.
