Where these numbers come from

Puerto Vallarta is a Mexican stop, so local prices are in pesos. Prices shown in US dollars. Check current exchange rates. The conversions here use one static rate of 18.1259 pesos per US dollar on September 30, 2026, from ECB-based reference data. Your card or the vendor's own rate will differ, so read the USD figures as estimates.

Ships normally dock at the terminal, with one guide noting room for three ships at once and tenders for overflow vessels. Guides place the terminal about 3 to 3.5 miles north of downtown. The immediate port zone has a craft market and large stores within 10 to 12 minutes on foot, but the Malecon and the historic center are not practical to reach on foot.

That makes the taxi the main cost. Two guides differ slightly, one quoting US$5 to US$7 per person and the other US$5 to US$16 per ride from the terminal to the Malecon or Centro. Flat zone rates apply, with no meters, so agree the price before you sit down. Yellow city taxis outside the gate are reported cheaper than the white taxis inside. The local bus, marked Centro, costs 10 to 12 pesos (about $0.55 to $0.66) and takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Excursion prices scale with activity. Snorkeling runs about US$48 to US$65 per person. All-inclusive beach days run US$80 to US$120. Adventure packages with ziplines or ATVs cost US$160 to US$200 and up from cruise lines, while independent operators are described as 30 to 50 percent cheaper. A street taco costs roughly 20 to 40 pesos ($1.10 to $2.21).

Worked example, two adults. Round-trip taxi at the high end of US$16 each way = $32, then a Malecon lunch. A snorkel tour at $48 each = $96 instead covers the water and a transfer. Together that is $128. The budget version takes the bus both ways for 4 x 12 pesos = 48 pesos (about $2.65) and skips the paid tour, which leaves a day under $10 before food.

Timing matters. One guide gives a minimum 90 minutes to get back from Mismaloya Beach and suggests adding 30 more. To compare with other Pacific stops, see Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas or Ensenada, and run your plan in the cruise excursion budget calculator.
