Costa Maya is built around one idea: the terminal is separate from the town. Ships tie up at a long pier, and the walk to the terminal building takes 10 to 15 minutes unless you catch the free trolley. The terminal itself has shops, restaurants, a free pool, showers and Wi-Fi, so you can spend the day there at no cost. The nearby fishing village of Mahahual is where most independent visitors head.
Mahahual lies roughly two miles from the pier. A taxi takes 5 to 10 minutes, and sources disagree on the price: one 2026-era guide says about $4 to $5 per person, while a 2024 Points Guy article says $8 for the ride. Plan on the higher number and expect some drivers to quote in pesos or dollars, so settle the currency first. Walking is possible in 30 to 45 minutes after the port exit, but that adds heat and eats time. Longer taxi runs cost more, with $20 to Xcalak and $30 to Bacalar listed in 2024.
Excursion prices cluster in two bands. Short, local trips cost $49 for a turtle snorkel tour or $99 for a beach club day. Full-day trips cost $119 to $150: Bacalar Lagoon is $129 for adults, and Chacchoben ruins are listed at $129 to $150. Children's prices are lower on several tours. Bacalar is the most popular trip, and boat tours there pause every Wednesday, so a Wednesday call changes your options.
